Equality Bodies have played an important role in the fight against pay discrimination in Europe. Depending on the national context, they can investigate cases of unequal pay, bring them to court, raise awareness on the gender pay gap, and so on.
In March 2021, the European Commission issued a Proposal for a Directive on Pay Transparency. A political agreement on this Directive was reached between the European Parliament and the Council in December 2022.
The proposed legislation will harmonize a very fragmented landscape when it comes to Equality Bodies and equal pay. Moreover, it will grant new powers to Equality Bodies with regards to implementing the principle of equal pay in the EU.
The new Equinet report analyses the different practices of Equality Bodies to tackle pay discrimination, shares good practices and addresses the opportunities that the Directive will create for Equality Bodies in Europe and how it will support their work to achieve equal pay.
