This seminar took place in person in Vilnius, Lithuania on 3-4 June 2024. It was aimed at Staff members of Equality Bodies using or considering the use of situation testing in their work, particularly members of the Working Groups on Policy Formation, Research and Data Collection, and Equality Law.
Situation testing has been used by anti-discrimination lawyers and researchers for decades. Not only can it be a useful and much needed tool to gather proof in individual cases, it is also an important tool for research, awareness-raising and policy work, effective in monitoring, uncovering and illustrating discrimination and achieving practical change. Despite this long history and its usefulness, situation testing remains a relatively lesser known and under-used tool in challenging discrimination. Limited knowledge of this tool sometimes also leads to concerns about its fairness and admissibility. Similarly to the broader equality community, situation testing is known and used by some Equality Bodies, but for many, it remains a new and relatively unknown tool.
As a result of the seminar, more Equality Bodies would use situation testing, increasing the effectiveness of their legal, policy, research and awareness-raising work.
