On 7 May 2024 we are celebrating an extraordinary achievement on our journey towards a more just Europe. The Council of the European Union announced the adoption of the EU Directives on Standards for Equality Bodies, marking a significant milestone in our collective efforts to ensure more equal societies across Europe.
This binding legislation will strengthen the enforcement of EU equal treatment laws. But they are more than a mere piece of technical legislation: they are a great leap forward in protecting those who experience discrimination and in ensuring equal access to justice to all. By granting Equality Bodies with a broader mandate, increased resources, enhanced powers, and greater independence, these directives ensure that every individual in every Member State can fully enjoy their equality rights.
This is a historic moment in a long journey guided by the European values of equality and human dignity. Starting from the 2017 ECRI recommendation on standards for Equality Bodies, followed closely by the 2018 European Commission recommendation, European institutions grew increasingly aware of the importance of establishing minimum requirements so that Equality Bodies could ensure protections against discrimination for all.
Equinet is grateful to all partners who have been instrumental in shaping this transformative legislation. We particularly thank the invaluable support and leadership provided by:
As we celebrate this remarkable achievement, we also look towards the future with optimism and determination. The next phase of implementation will require the active involvement of Member States, and we are confident that together, we will navigate this journey with diligence and determination. The appointment of a new Commissioner for Equality would be equally significant, to provide additional support and guidance, ensuring the smooth and effective implementation of the directives as well as continued leadership across future priorities for a Union of Equality.
This moment is a testament that our shared vision of a more inclusive and equitable Europe is possible. Let us continue to work closely together, inspired by the progress we have achieved and motivated by the promise of a brighter, fairer future for all.
